Molestation Staged in Guwahati : The city of eastern light in pitch darkness

The molestation of a 17-year old girl in Guwahati on Monday on her way back home from a bar has sparked nation-wide debate over the safety of the fairer sex in the country. As per the reports, she was molested, groped at and beaten up,  by a mob comprising of around 20 men. The shocking part is that all this happened in full public view – even the Media itself was present to cover this incident live. But no one dared to go against those molesters, as if they staged it for the wider public. It’s disgusting that the entire incident was shot on camera by a News Live camera person and is now viral on the Internet with   huge number of views from all over the globe. Upon being questioned on the ethics behind shooting a molestation incident live and airing it, the channel said they did it “in public interest“. Remember Constitution of India (Basically Article 19)? Is this what constitutes Public Interest? What about the Media Ethics?

Molesters in Guwahati

One thing is sure for we Indians that an outrage lasts till the headline lasts but we forget to understand that many lives are tarnished because of such shocking incidents. We do forget that are being girls molested and sexual harassment is there on the streets of this nation everyday. And moreover, all of these are bailable offences. Even after many pleading to the Home Ministry to  pass the Criminal Law amendment to change the law relating to sexual assault, but still it doesn’t seem to be on the priority list of the Government. And we ourselves facilitate such incidents to bring a bad name to the culture and ethics of our great country.  Hail India!
